Türkiye Grand Tour: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus

A 10-day private Türkiye tour for Indian travellers: Istanbul, a Cappadocia balloon flight, Pamukkale's terraces and Ephesus, with flight and visa notes.

Duration: 10 days 9 nightsRoute: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale, Ephesus, Kuşadası, İzmirBest season: April to June, September to October

Who this tour is for

The Grand Tour is for travellers who want to see Türkiye's three layers in a single trip: the Ottoman and Byzantine capital, the volcanic landscape of the central plateau and the Greek and Roman ruins of the Aegean coast. Ten days lets the route breathe. Most of the long distances are flown, so you spend your time at the sights rather than on motorways.

It works well for families with school-age children during holidays, for couples celebrating an anniversary and for senior travellers who prefer to unpack only a few times. It is a heavier schedule than our seven-day Istanbul and Cappadocia tour, with several flights and an early start on balloon morning, so we recommend it for people who enjoy sightseeing and do not mind moving hotels four times.

If you would rather spend days on a beach, our Turkish Riviera tour is a better fit.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Istanbul

Operators mention direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore [1]. You are met at the airport and taken to your hotel. In the evening an optional Bosphorus cruise shows the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Dolmabahçe Palace from the water [2].

Day 2: Old Istanbul

Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and Topkapı Palace with a guide, finishing at the Grand Bazaar [2][3].

Day 3: Istanbul, open day

A free day, with optional extras such as the Spice Bazaar, a ferry to the Asian shore or İstiklal Street. Many group tours leave this day free so guests can recover and shop [3].

Day 4: Fly to Cappadocia

Morning flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir, about 1.5 hours [2]. A transfer to Göreme and a cave hotel check-in follow, then sunset at Uçhisar Castle.

Day 5: Balloon and valleys

A dawn balloon flight over the fairy chimneys, then the Göreme Open-Air Museum, the Devrent and Paşabağ valleys and Avanos [2]. Cappadocia is also known for its underground cities [3].

Day 6: Cappadocia to the Aegean side

There is no direct flight between Cappadocia and Pamukkale, so you route through Istanbul; Turkish Airlines flies Istanbul to Denizli in about an hour [4]. Road travel would take seven to eight hours over roughly 530 km, and we avoid it [4]. You land in Denizli in the evening and stay near Pamukkale.

Day 7: Pamukkale and Hierapolis

The white travertine terraces, the Cleopatra thermal pool and the ancient city of Hierapolis, a UNESCO site [2]. In the afternoon we drive towards İzmir and Kuşadası, a journey of about three hours to İzmir [2].

Day 8: Ephesus

The Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the House of the Virgin Mary [5]. Free time in Kuşadası by the sea afterwards.

Day 9: İzmir and Istanbul

A drive or short flight back via İzmir and a late-afternoon flight to Istanbul [2]. Final evening at the Spice Bazaar or on İstiklal Street.

Day 10: Departure

Airport transfer and your flight home.

Highlights

  • Four distinct regions in one trip, with domestic flights replacing the long drives
  • Sunrise balloon over Cappadocia, with a spare morning in the plan
  • Pamukkale's travertines and the ancient pools of Hierapolis
  • The Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre at Ephesus
  • A private guide and car at every stop
  • Vegetarian, Jain and halal meals arranged in advance

Practical notes

  • Visa: Indian citizens can use the Türkiye e-visa if they hold a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the USA, the UK or Ireland; the supporting document must be valid on the day of entry [6]. The e-visa is single-entry and valid for 30 days [7], so a ten-day tour sits comfortably inside it. Without a supporting visa, apply for a sticker visa at a Turkish mission [7]. Use the official portal [8].
  • Season: April to June and September to October are the sweet spots [2]. Summer on the Aegean coast is hot, while winter brings cold mornings in Cappadocia and occasional cancellations of balloon flights.
  • Flights: Several domestic flights are involved. Allow generous luggage allowances, and keep a small cabin bag for the early balloon morning. Flights between Istanbul and Denizli leave in the early morning and late evening [4].
  • Balloon weather: Around 25 to 30 per cent of flights are grounded each year, and a cancelled flight usually means a refund or rebooking for the next morning [9]. Book it on your first morning in Cappadocia, not your last.
  • Clothing: Modest clothing for mosques and a scarf for women. Comfortable shoes for stone paths at Ephesus and Hierapolis.
  • Money: Carry a card enabled for international use and a little cash.

Frequently asked questions

Is ten days enough, or should we add more? It is enough for the main highlights. If you want a slower pace, consider a further two nights on the Aegean coast or in Cappadocia.

Can the route be reversed, starting in İzmir? Yes. Some travellers start at the Aegean coast and finish in Istanbul. We choose the direction based on your flight times and the weather.

What if my balloon flight is cancelled? Rebooking for the next available morning is the normal remedy [9]. Because Day 6 is a travel day, the balloon sits on Day 5; if it is cancelled, we can add a night in Cappadocia and move the later flights.
