Istanbul and Cappadocia Classic Tour
A 7-day private Istanbul and Cappadocia tour for Indian travellers: Bosphorus cruise, Hagia Sophia, a sunrise balloon flight and cave hotels, with e-visa notes.
Who this tour is for
This is the first Türkiye trip most Indian travellers should consider. It pairs two places that could not be more different: Istanbul, a city of mosques, palaces and bazaars that straddles two continents, and Cappadocia, a landscape of rock valleys, cave hotels and dawn balloons. Seven days is enough to see both without rushing, and short enough to fit into a long weekend plus a week of leave.
It suits couples, families with teenagers, small groups of friends and parents travelling with grown-up children. It is also a good first international trip for people who want a relaxed pace and a guide who understands vegetarian, Jain and halal requirements. If you want beaches and sailing, look at our Turkish Riviera tour instead. If you have ten days, the Grand Tour adds Pamukkale and Ephesus.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Istanbul
Direct flights run to Istanbul from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore [1]. You are met at the airport and taken to your hotel in Sultanahmet or Taksim. In the evening there is an optional Bosphorus cruise, which passes the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Dolmabahçe Palace from the water [2].
Day 2: The old city
A guided walk through the historic peninsula: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and Topkapı Palace. The day ends at the Grand Bazaar, where a guide can help with bargaining [2].
Day 3: Istanbul at your own pace
This day is deliberately open. Choices include the Spice Bazaar, a ferry to the Asian side, İstiklal Street and Galata, or a Turkish bath. Travellers who prefer a lighter day can simply rest before the early flight.
Day 4: Fly to Cappadocia
A morning flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir takes about 1.5 hours [2]. After a transfer to Göreme you check into a cave hotel. The late afternoon is for Uçhisar Castle or Sunset Point, and your balloon is booked for the next morning.
Day 5: Balloon flight and the valleys
The balloon takes off before sunrise and floats over fairy chimneys and valleys [2]. Later you visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum, the Devrent and Paşabağ valleys and the pottery village of Avanos. A folk-dance evening is optional [2].
Day 6: Underground city and a quiet day
Cappadocia has underground cities carved by early Christian communities [3]. We visit one in the morning. The afternoon is open for a valley walk, a pottery lesson or a horse ride. If your balloon flight was cancelled on Day 5, this is the day we rebook it.
Day 7: Return
Fly from Kayseri or Nevşehir to Istanbul and onward to India. We schedule the connection with a comfortable margin.

Practical notes
- Visa: Indian passport holders need a visa for Türkiye. Those who hold a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the USA, the UK or Ireland can apply for an e-visa; the supporting document must be valid on the date you enter Türkiye, and e-visas from other countries do not count [4]. The e-visa is described as single-entry and valid for 30 days [5]. It is for tourism or commerce only [4]. You should carry the original supporting document, and airlines will not board applicants whose documents do not meet the criteria [4]. Travellers without such a visa apply for a sticker visa at a Turkish mission [5]. Check the official portal before you pay [6].
- Season: April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months [2]. Balloon flights are decided each morning by the civil aviation authority, and roughly a quarter to a third of flights are grounded over a year, mostly because of wind [7].
- Flights: Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore are mentioned by operators [1]. Domestic flights save eight to ten hours compared with road travel [2].
- Money: Türkiye uses the Turkish lira. Carry a card with international use enabled, and a little cash for bazaars.
- Clothing: Cover shoulders and knees, and bring a scarf for mosques. Cappadocia mornings are cold before sunrise, so carry a jacket.
- Health: Check your own travel insurance for balloon flights. Ask your hotel whether tap water is drinkable, and buy bottled water if unsure.
- Food: Indian restaurants exist in Istanbul, and vegetarian mezze are available across the country [1].
Frequently asked questions
Is the balloon flight guaranteed? No. The authority decides each morning whether flying is permitted, and a cancelled flight normally means a full refund or a free rebooking for the next available morning [7]. That is why our programme keeps a spare morning.
Can I apply for the e-visa if I only have a US or UK visa on an old passport? The embassy states that a supporting visa on an old passport can still be used if its validity covers your entry date; you register the e-visa on your current passport and carry the old one to immigration [4].
Is this tour suitable for elderly parents? Yes, with care. Istanbul involves a lot of walking on uneven ground. We can shorten the days, use a private car between sights and skip the steepest valleys in Cappadocia.
